The United States Constitution is the supreme law of the United States of America. It is the first and most crucial document of the American government. The Constitution was written in the 1780s, and ratified in 1789, after the Articles of Confederation had been signed, but before the United States government was formed. The Constitution is composed of seven articles, which discuss, among other things, the rights of the people, the separation of powers, and the structure of the government.

The first ten amendments are often referred to as the Bill of Rights. The first eight articles, along with the second and third, are usually considered to form a separate part of the Constitution, while the first, second, and third articles are often considered non-binding "troubleshooting" guidelines. The first, second, and third amendments are usually the most protection of individual liberty, while the fifth, sixth, and seventh articles protect civil rights and the seventh article establishes the supremacy of the federal government. The first, second, and third amendments, along with the fifth, sixth, and seventh articles, form what is commonly referred to as the "first seven amendments", or simply the "Amendments".
